My Testimonial
People say, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” I say, “Where there’s God, there’s a way.”
In 2013, I was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street. I died, was resuscitated, spent 6½ weeks in a coma, and suffered severe brain damage.
When I woke up, everything had changed. I had forgotten my alphabet, could barely count using my fingers, couldn’t see closed captioning from five feet away, and spoke gibberish.
For years, I struggled with balance, strength, walking, and communication. But whenever I was alone, I worked. I stretched on the floor, did squats while holding onto my bed, pulled myself up, and practiced walking around it.
Nobody made me do it. I wanted my life back.
Slowly, the light came back on. I felt like me again.
Today, I walk with my walker, speak more clearly, think clearly, and genuinely love my life.
My Mom is one of my best friends and has been an important part of my recovery. Once I told her, “I could’ve been a contender.” She answered, “You are.” I love that lady.
By my side is Scrumptious, my Terri-Poo and another one of God’s blessings. I still use my electric wheelchair—my “car”—for longer trips and what Scrumptious and I call Walk and Roll.
I can fully use only one hand, and because I was right-handed before my accident, I taught myself to do things with my left.
But I refuse to let what happened determine what I can create next. That is part of why I created Boycott Ordinary™.
My life taught me that your life doesn’t have to look the way you expected it to be beautiful. Your setbacks don’t erase your possibilities.
I once wondered whether I would walk again. Now I walk.
I once struggled to communicate. Now I’m telling you my story.
I love being me. I love my life. And I thank God for every day I get to live it.
Live with Purpose. Stand Apart. And always remember: You’re Remarkable!
